Today, Indian American Republican Council (IARC) Chairman Dr. R. Vijayanagar criticized U.S. Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD) for telling his constituents that between 4-6 billion jobs will be outsourced to India.
“Here we go again. Yet another Democrat has used India as a scapegoat to score political points in a desperate attempt to win an election. Democrats in state legislatures and the Congress have rushed to introduce hundreds of bills to restrict or ban outsourcing because their union supporters have asked them to. These unions and Democrats ignore the devastating effect 9/11 had on our economy, the recession that President inherited from the Clinton era and the numerous corporate scandals that affected our nation when they discuss job losses.
“Now, Senator Tom Daschle, down in the polls and fighting for his political life, says between 4-6 billion jobs, the equivalent of our planet’s population, will be outsourced to India. What basis is there for this statement?”
This is not the first time that Democrats have tied their opposition to outsourcing based on their relationships with unions. Disgraced Governor Jim McGreevey (D-NJ) recently signed an executive order restricting state agencies from hiring contractors that employ overseas workers. One article noted that “supporters from organized labor” were with the Governor when he signed the order; the order was “welcomed by unions“; it “was McGreevey’s third public appearance with a labor theme”; “Unions also provide a supportive audience for McGreevey as he re-emerges from isolation”; “Labor has been one of McGreevey’s biggest backers throughout his political career, and as governor he has taken a number of steps that benefit unions.” (Joe Donohue, “Jersey Curbs Outsourcing by State Agencies – Labor Applauds Governor’s Executive Order, but Chamber of Commerce Denounces it,” New Jersey Star-Ledger, September 10, 2004).
“The blatant political stunts pulled by Senator Daschle and Governor McGreevey indicate how much these Democrats will say and do in the interests of unions. The recent statistics on our economy indicate these statements are nothing but cheap rhetoric, but unfortunately, the Indian American community and the world’s largest democracy are at the receiving end of these desperate political stunts.”
