We helped re-elect Bush, too
Thursday, November 25th, 2004 Letters to the Editor by IARCI wholeheartedly agree with David Yepsen’s analysis (“Liberals Should Ditch That Snooty Attitude,” Nov. 18) as to why President Bush was able to make history by being the first Republican presidential candidate to win Iowa in 20 years (by 10,059 votes, no less). In a time of war, Iowans chose a leader of clear vision, moral strength and decisive action.
There was one factor, however, that Yepsen missed: Thousands of volunteers, young and old, mobilized to help the president to victory in Iowa.
In the month I spent in Polk and Dallas counties, I met thousands of excited volunteers who worked tirelessly to help register new voters, walk precincts, organize rallies and staff phone banks.
Unlike the paid staff of the many 527s, thousands of Iowans enthusiastically selflessly devoted countless hours in support of President Bush, Iowa and the country, and that volunteer spirit made all the difference.
