Today, IARC Chairman Dr. Raghavendra Vijayanagar (Dr. Vijay) praised the Republican leadership in Congress and President George W. Bush for the warm welcome they extended to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his historic visit to America.
“The joint statement by Prime Minister Singh and President Bush signals a new chapter in U.S.-India relations,” stated Dr. Vijay. “Across the board, agreements to expand and deepen bilateral relations in numerous areas were reached. Indian American Republicans were present at the White House greeting ceremony on the South Lawn in honor of Prime Minister Singh, we attended the State Dinner, and we were present for the Prime Minister’s address to a joint session of Congress. President Bush and Prime Minister Singh personally met with more than 20 Indian Americans appointed to the Bush Administration, the highest in American history. In addition, we were pleased to see House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a longtime supporter of Indian Americans, sponsor a resolution, H. Res. 364, which overwhelmingly passed the House by a margin of 388-0.”
Dr. Vijay and his wife Kathleen were honored to be personal guests of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert during Prime Minister Singh’s speech to Congress. The IARC also secured 100 tickets to the White House greeting ceremony for the Indian American Center for Political Awareness (IACPA) summer interns, and for members of the South Asian American Congressional Staff Association (SAACSA), thereby enabling the second generation of young Indian Americans the opportunity to take part in this important event.
